This article describes an update that improves the reliability and performance of 4KB sector hard disk drives on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
Note 4KB sector hard disk drives may use 512B emulation technology. This technology provides an emulation to enable the drive controller and the operating system to use 4KB sectors as 512 Byte Logical Block Address. These drives are also known as 512B emulated hard disk drives.
This hotfix rollup package resolves the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
You have a 4KB sector hard disk drive on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. You use the hard disk drive together with the built-in ATA driver. After you install a third-party storport driver for the hard disk drive, applications and services that use Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) cannot work correctly. These applications include Active Directory, Windows Desktop Search, certification authority (CA), WINS, DHCP, Windows Live Mail and Windows Update. For example, when you use Windows Update and then you click „Check for updates,“ you receive the following error message:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may have to restart your computer.
Additionally, the following error is logged into the Application log:Log Name: Application
Date: <Date time>
Event ID: 412
Task Category: Logging/Recovery
Description: wuaueng.dll (936) SUS20ClientDataStore: Unable to read the header of logfile C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.log. Error -546.
When you apply a Microsoft Windows Image (.wim) file to a 4KB sector drive by using ImageX command-line tool in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2, you notice that this process takes more time than to apply the file to a 512 Byte sector drive.
The USB storage port driver (Usbstor.sys) does not support IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY requests that have the STORAGE_ACCESS_ALIGNMENT_DESCRIPTOR structure to retrieve the storage access alignment descriptor data for 4KB sector drives.
Additionally, this hotfix rollup package includes fixes that are documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.981208 Poor performance when you transfer many small files on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
Additionally, this hotfix rollup package adds 4KB sector drive support for the following built-in storage drivers.

Na dann, Viel Spass beim selber Testen!
